How Do I Check A Therapist out?

Looking for a Therapist can be a very scary task. You are about to embark on a wonderful emotional journey and you want to make sure that your passenger (The Therapist) can support you during this ride. Like with any relationship, you want to make sure this person is a good fit for you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to check us out! Here are some questions to ask a Therapist to help with your search.

  • Are you a licensed health service practitioner? How many years have you been providing mental health services?

  • What is your availability? How do I schedule future appointments?

  • Describe how you have been feeling and what brings you to counseling. Ask what experience do you have helping people with these types of problems?

  • What are your areas of expertise – for example, working with children and families?

  • What is your style of interaction with your clients? What kinds of treatments do you use with your clients?

  • How long is each session?

  • What are your fees? Do you have a sliding-scale fee policy?

  • What types of insurance do you accept? Will you accept direct billing to/payment from my insurance company?

  • What payment forms do you accept?

  • How much therapy would you recommend?

  • How do you determine my treatment goals?
